Ambleside and Windermere will be awash with wetsuits on the weekend of Friday June 8th – Sunday June 10th 2018. This is the weekend (in fact 3 day spectacular) of the annual Great North Swim, an extremely exciting event for any open swimmer but also for spectators as hundreds of people watch as the competitors take to the water.
The Great North Swim is Europe’s biggest open water swimming event attracting over 10,000 participants. First held on Lake Windermere in 2008 with swimmers totally around 2000, it has grown as an event quite considerably over the years. To encourage participants of all ages and abilities, swimmers can choose to enter swims starting with 250 metres, half mile, one and two miles swims as well as 5km and the 10km, challenges to suit all.
New for 2018 is quite something, a new venue, Brockhole – the Lake District National Park Visitor Centre. The change has occurred due to the popularity and it has enabled the event to be bigger and better for entrants as well as spectators. The new location means access to the visitor centre with adventure playgrounds, soft play areas, archery experiences and creative crafts to name just a few. The perfect all encompassing weekend break for the whole family whether you’re competing, supporting or spectating.
Brockhole being located between Windermere and Ambleside means either location is where to stay. For all, Ambleside is the ideal place to stay. Choose to bus, walk or cycle to Brockhole avoiding the busy roads or the new to park. Rothay Garth Bed & Breakfast in Ambleside is a good tip. Great value and a private car park. After returning from a full day watching (or swimming!) the Great North Swim, Ambleside has all the restaurants and pubs required to replenish and refuel.
