Going away for Christmas is getting more and more popular. For families it means making the most of the two week school holiday for couples and friends, the chance to relax and unwind.
The Lake District, the 365 day a year destination, is geared up for celebrating Christmas in. A choice of accommodation, lots to see and do, plenty of places to eat and drink with many offering Christmas Day lunch too.
Coniston is a wonderland at Christmas and a superb location to spend this very special time of the year. Plenty going on yet small enough for those seeking complete privacy and peacefulness, Coniston has it all. Booking a cottage for a Christmas short break or holidays means having the choice to stay in or go out. On the doorstep are some fantastic pubs each serving fabulous festive food during December such as the Black Bull (home of Coniston Brewing Co – Bluebird Bitter) and the Wilson’s Arms and Church House Inn both at Torver. Just a short distance from Coniston village these two establishments in Torver are lovely for food or simply go for a drink and sit in front of the roaring log fires in each. Dogs are welcome too. From Torver walk to Coniston Water along the lake and to the southern tip.
On the doorstep of Coniston visit the pretty village of Hawkshead, stop off at Hill Top and look around the gardens that gave Beatrix Potter the inspiration for her world famous books and take a walk up Walna Scar and onto Coniston Old Man (weather permitting!). Views from there are stunning with clear days offering views of Morecambe Bay, Scafell Pike and even Blackpool Tower. A visit to Coniston Boating Centre to hire a motor boat is another must. Open daily during December except for December 23 – 26 inclusively and December 31st+January 1st. It’s a great way to see the landscape at a different perspective, just take plenty of warm clothing!
